YOUR GRAND IMAGE
Picture not Perfect
You and a friend have been exploring The Basin in Franconia Notch, and she wants a picture by the stream.  You’re only to happy to oblige, but alas and alack - your camera’s metering system was fooled by the extreme light and shadow of the scene.  She is slightly underexposed with a ruddy cast, the background gray granite contains a black hole, and much of the water and light granite is washed out

Fortunately, you have another picture of the same scene.  It’s not quite perfect, but the water has a nice silky appearance, there is detail in the light granite rock, and some visible detail in the basin interior.  A better picture of The Basin, but she’s not in it.

We carefully select and cut the lady from the first image,  adjust brightness, contrast, color balance, and sharpen the essential edges

The better basin image is enhanced by dodging the gray granite that forms the basin back wall and the smooth water in the interior of the pool.  Next, the image is sharpened slightly overall.  Note the interior basin detail that is now visible and the more natural grainy appearance of the foreground light granite rock.

Lastly, the lady’s image is pasted into a floating layer and positioned so that her arms appear to be resting on the rail.  Voilà! Picture is Perfect.
